What It Is

A manual action means a human reviewer at Google personally evaluated your site and determined it violates Google's webmaster quality guidelines. This is non-algorithmic; a person made this decision. Security issues, conversely, flag active malware infections, hacked code, phishing structures, or harmful downloads.

These are the single most severe penalties in search. They can result in specific sections being penalized, catastrophic ranking demotions, or the entire domain being removed from the Google index. Unlike standard algorithmic drops, manual penalties never resolve on their own—they require clean compliance fixes and a formal reconsideration request.

1. Analyze the Penalty Details

Open Search Console > Security & Manual Actions > Manual Actions. Read the exact warning files, check flagged pages, and identify the specific violation class.

2. Purge & Disavow Toxic Backlinks

For unnatural inbound links: download link data, audit spam patterns, contact webmasters to request link removals, and list all unremovable spam domains in a disavow text file.

3. Overhaul or Delete Thin Content

For thin or scraped content: substantially expand copy quality with original data and unique insights, or delete unhelpful pages and set up 301 redirects to authoritative parent pages.

4. Cleanse and Secure Hacked Systems

For hacked directories: scan immediately with hosting scanners. Eradicate all malicious file injections, patch structural security holes, update CMS plugins/themes/core, and cycle all login credentials.

5. Compile Detailed Correction Records

Document every single modification made. Keep exact dates of code changes, receipts of link removal requests, security audit logs, and disavow submissions. Google reviewers require evidence.

6. Submit a Reconsideration Request

Go to GSC > Manual Actions > Request a Review. Write an extremely specific, transparent explanation detailing the root cause, exact actions taken, and attach links to your documentation proofs.
