Internal
Linking Failures
Your link equity is pooling in the wrong places.
What It Is
Internal linking distributes authority from high-authority pages to pages that need ranking support. Done poorly — or not done intentionally — link equity pools on low-priority pages: navigation pages, contact pages, privacy policies, and recently-published posts. High-priority commercial pages that need authority sit underlinked while low-priority pages are over-linked from menus and footers. Every internal link is an authority transfer. The most linked-to pages aren't always the most important — they're often the most navigated.
Why It Matters
Agencies that strategically direct internal links toward high-priority commercial pages see measurable ranking improvements without building a single new external link. Internal linking is one of the highest-ROI SEO activities because the authority already exists on the site — it just needs to be directed strategically. Fixing internal linking failures costs only time and produces ranking improvements on existing content within weeks.
Common Causes
Understanding why this failure occurs is the first step to fixing it permanently.
Navigation Menus Linking to Everything Equally
Global navigation menus linking to every major page with equal visual prominence — distributing homepage authority evenly across all linked pages rather than directing it where it matters most.
Blog Posts Linking to Homepage Instead of Services
New content linking to the homepage or contact page in CTAs and body text instead of linking to the relevant service or product pages that the content was written to support.
New Content Never Linking to Old Priority Pages
A one-directional publishing pattern where new pages never reach back to link older high-priority pages — leaving valuable older content increasingly isolated as the site grows.
Footer Links Overweighting Low-Priority Pages
Footer links to privacy policy, terms of service, and other legal pages appearing on every page of the site — these low-priority pages often have higher internal link counts than the commercial pages driving revenue.

Pro Tip
Contextual body links pass far more authority than navigational links.
A link from within a relevant body text paragraph sends a stronger topical relevance signal than 10 footer links to the same page. The surrounding text provides context that tells Google what the linked page is about — making contextual links more valuable for both authority transfer and topical signal. Always prioritize getting links placed in body text over getting links placed in navigation structures, even if navigational placement is technically easier to implement.
